Dr. Francine K. Rattner, Owner, Medical Director
Dr. Rattner grew up in Baltimore. Her passion to become a veterinarian was present as a young child. She had many pets, among them dogs, cats, hamsters, turtles and a pet duck. After asking advice at a local feed store about why her pet duck, Jennifer, wouldn't lay eggs she found out Jennifer was actually a male! Caring for so many animals, she truly discovered and nurtured her love for them, no matter their shape or size, horses included. Once Dr. Rattner was able to read, she surrounded herself by every book she could get at the library about animals and veterinarians. She knew she would one day dedicate her life to caring for pets and the people who love them.
Dr. Rattner attended the University of Maryland, graduating with a degree in Animal Science. After a few years as an agricultural statistician for the Census Bureau, she went back to her dream and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. The owner and medical director of South Arundel Veterinary Hospital, she practices conventional and holistic medicine, becoming certified in Veterinary Homeopathy in 1997. It was her investigation that brought the use of Class IV Therapy Laser to South Arundel in 2010. She is always researching the latest technology available in order to provide state of the art care to our patients. Her Ask the Vet column has been published weekly in the Annapolis Capital Gazette for many years.
Her husband is an environmental toxicologist with the U.S. government. They provide a loving home for Symi, a very happy Cairn Terrier rescue. Their son, Alex is working on his PhD in mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech. His wife is studying Physical Therapy and they share their love with an adorable part-Siamese cat, Satay who Dr. Rattner rescued for them. When not at the office, Dr. Rattner loves to garden, kayak and work on her photography skills.
